Full Day Workshop with Elena Brower at Yoga Journal Live! New York Conference, April 8, 2016

The Yoga Journal Live! New York Conference takes place every year at the Hilton Hotel in midtown New York City, featuring renowned yoga teachers who can help you take your yoga, wellness and spiritual practice to the next level. What's unique about this event is that it's not just about yoga!  There was a marketplace of wellness vendors exhibiting all natural and sustainable products in yoga wear, beverages, jewelry, skin-care, and wellness retreats.

This year's conference in New York City featured an all-star line up yoga instructors, including Amy Ippolitti, Elena Brower, Kathryn Budig, Seane Corn, Bo Forbes, Shiva Rea, Rodney Yee, Gabrielle Bernstein, and more!

The Friday and Monday sessions of Yoga Journal Live! New York features a full day immersion class with a yoga teacher of your choice.  These full day classes give you a chance to learn the techniques well with personalized attention and to ask the instructor any questions you may have.

This year, we took the full day Friday class with Elena Brower, who's known for incorporating self-awareness, compassion, mindfulness, and wellness into her classes so well you leave feeling calm, yet energized and refreshed!  This year's topic i
Art of Attention: Agility, Grace, and Strength.

In today's post we'll share an effective practice from Elena Brower on how you can start off your mornings, or revive your afternoons with these energizing and uplifting practices.  Ideally, the steps below should be performed in order - give it a try and feel the viva la difference.

1. Sit on your yoga mat cross legged and start massaging your hands, massage the palms and the intersections between each fingers.  Then lightly pull each finger and let your hands slide off each finger.  These actions stimulate the liver. as all body parts are INTERCONNECTED

2. Massage your scalp with your hands

3. Stand up.  Gently poke your stomach with the tip of your fingers and your sides, this stimulates the kidneys

4. Rhythm is important.  Repeat shrugging your shoulders in a circular motion, then run in a stationary place - imaging you are staying within a 12 inch square

5. Now the trick for lengthening your spine.  Instead of bending down to touch your toes with your hands, do this stretch with your knees slightly bent.  This will stretch out your spine if your legs are not as flexible.

6. After you stretch out your spine using the method described in step five, you should have a much easier time touching your toes with your hands now that your spine is stretched out!

7. Take a deep breath and thank yourself for this brief yet effective morning practice!

Adhere to these seven steps to start off your morning or in time of stress.  It was a transformative experience to dedicate a whole day to learning with Elena Brower.  We learned it's just as important to be compassionate to others as it is to yourself.

If you're attending any Yoga Journal Live! Event, don't miss out on the full day immersion classes with a renowned yoga instructor.  The next event this year is in San Diego at the beautiful Hotel Del Coronado from June 23 - 27, 2016 - tickets can be purchased here.  Get 15% off your ticket with the code CHAKRA

MIRROR CELLS Exhibit at the Whitney Museum of American Art - MAY 13–AUG 21, 2016

The Mirror Cells exhibit, on display from MAY 13 – AUG 21, 2016 at the Whitney Museum of American Art, presents a unique series of sculptures by five up and coming artists who explore disparate links among objects to immerse viewers in strange invented fantasy worlds.
The exhibition’s title Mirror Cells refers to mirror neurons―specialized brain cells that are activated when observing the behavior of others. Maggie Lee’s video-based installations chart her family’s ups and downs, while Win McCarthy’s precarious sculptures are imbued with the anxiety of daily life in an unstable world.
Liz Craft - Spider Woman - Mixed Media
Likewise, the anthropomorphic shapes of Elizabeth Jaeger’s large-scale ceramic vessels imply ambiguous emotions, and Liz Craft’s works are connected through internal dialogues reflected in sculptural mouths, word bubbles, and spider women.
Liz Craft - Spider Woman - Mixed Media
Rochelle Goldberg’s installation alludes to unstable environments and questions of survival through her use of morphing growth cycles of living things.
Largely composed of modest materials such as wood, clay, plaster, and fabric, these works engage the viewer through a sense of immediacy and tactility.
Mirror Cells is organized by Whitney associate curators Christopher Y. Lew and Jane Panetta.

This year's 7th annual LuckyRice NY Moon Festival Cocktail Feast celebrates the start of the annual Mid-Autumn Moon Festival at the Bowery Hotel in downtown New York City.

It was a fabulous night of delightfully creative cocktail concoctions, fun, and music with a vibrant and festive crowd.  Cocktails inspired by Asian dishes and ingredients were made with signature Bombay Sapphire East Gin and other top shelf libations.

This event made us think for a few hours that we were enjoying the night out in southeast Asia where drinks were inspired by local spices like lemongrass, cinnamon, kalamansi limes, kaffir lime, basil, and a cornucopia of tropical fruits and flavors.  Light dishes and desserts were also served to be paired with a well curated selection of cocktails.

ABC Home's  'Beauty Wellness Wisdom' event series brings together people and brands passionate about health, indigenous culture, sustainability, eco-consciousness, and beauty.

The event on October 15, 2016 featured Goop Beauty Director Jean Godfrey-June & Cherry Bombe's Editorial Director Kerry Diamond, morning meditation with Deepak Chopra,  and a discussion about the health benefits of infared therapy with Jason Wachob of MindBodyGreen, Lauren Berlingeri & Katie Kaps founders of HigherDOSE.

Fern Olivia Langham founder of Thyroid Yoga + Ajai Alchemy spoke about giving your body what it needs to heal.  For a busy place like New York City, this could mean establishing a ritual of laying with rose crystal quartz around your body grounding meditative moments.

Stephanie Wang, founder of the herbal apothecary - The Alchemist's Kitchen in the Lower East Side gave a fascinating talk on plant journeying and shamanic plant work.  Herbal spiritual healing involves not just taking the herbs, but also setting an intention during the healing ritual.

In addition to talks and discussions by thought leaders of the wellness field, the afternoon was filled with wellness experiences from ABC Home's collection of curated apothecaries.  Guests were able to sign up for facials with Tracie Martyn, wild-crafted herbal elixirs with Moon Juice, juice tastings with Rawpothecary, sea salt based hair styling sessions with Captain Blankenship, beauty treatments with Goop Beauty, manicures with Jinsoon, and tarot readings with Moon Deck.

The Beauty Wellness Wisdom event happens twice a year at ABC Home, and it's our favorite gathering in NYC for discovering sustainable, spiritual, all-natural, and creative ways to heal, rejuvenate, and beautify yourself from the inside out.

The exhibitionfeatures work by artists identified with the 1980s— Jean-Michel Basquiat, Sherrie Levine, David Salle, and Julian Schnabel—as well as by a significant number of less celebrated painters.

Often through exuberant work that engaged with the heroic gesture or pop imagery, these artists explored the traditions of figuration and history painting, and offered new interpretations of abstraction.

Many addressed fundamental questions about art-making in their work, while others took on political issues covering AIDS, feminism, gentrification, and war.

Far from dead, artists renegotiated their commitment to painting in the 1980s, and in the face of a media-saturated environment.

The medium suddenly came to represent an important intersection between new ways of seeing and a seemingly traditional way of making art—one full of possibility and thriving as many artists actively re-imagined what painting could be.

Fast Forward: Painting from the 1980s is organized by Jane Panetta, associate curator, with Melinda Lang, curatorial assistant.  Don't miss it!

On January 19, 2019, the Outsider Art Faircelebrated their 25thAnniversary in New York York City, the original fair dedicated to renowned and newly discovered self-taught artists from around the world.
A VIP Early Access Preview was held at the Metropolitan Pavilion with a select group of tastemakers from the art, culture, fashion, and entertainment milieu. “Art collectors, professionals and art lovers can't get enough of outsider, art brut and folk art. It's a great fair with the highest quality and we expect strong attendance all weekend", said fair Director, Becca Hoffman.

At the preview, notable galleries noted record sales, such as James Barron Art, who sold four works by Janet Sobel within the first half hour, and groups of Norris Embry works on paper.

"The energy of the fair is fabulous; we're meeting new collectors, as well as welcoming old friends. This is our first time exhibiting at the Outsider Art Fair, and it will definitely become a yearly tradition," said James Barron.

A highlight this year is critic Edward M. Gomez’s curated space, The Outsider Art Fair: 25 Years, a celebration that looks back at and honors the fair’s history, with one work of art representing each year of the fair.

Each work on display was actually shown at the fair in the year it represents in this retrospective survey, and in several cases was part of a group of works by an artist who made his or her debut at the fair in its designated year.

Also new this year is a special curated space titled The Quilts of Gee’s Bend, presenting the work of a small, rural Alabama community of mostly descendants of slaves, who for generations have produced hundreds of quilt masterpieces. Using recycled work clothes and dresses, feed sacks, and fabric remnants, the women composed bold geometries that are a visual testament to the community quilting groups and the aesthetic lineages of local families.

ABOUT OUTSIDER ART FAIR

The Outsider Art Fair is the original art fair specific to self-taught art created outside the mainstream. Founded in 1993 by Sandy Smith, OAF soon became a critical and commercial success.

In 2012, OAF was acquired by Wide Open Arts, a new company formed by art dealer Andrew Edlin. Its debut edition in 2013 saw the fair relocated to Chelsea and included guest curatorial projects and the OAF Talks program. OAF continues its tradition of presenting top dealers with prime examples of works by both legendary and newly discovered artists. The 2013 fair enjoyed rave reviews and more than tripled previous attendance levels. Propelled by this success, Wide Open Arts took the fair to Paris where it just presented its 4th edition, helping to reinvigorate the city’s long tradition of recognizing and championing art brut and self-taught artists.

We're huge fans of the Meatpacking District but little did we know that there's a party held every year to celebrate the best it has to offer.

Every year, the OPEN MARKET indoor block party at the Meatpacking district hosts the best of tastes, sounds, libations, fashion, and energy of this culturally vibrant neighborhood of New York City.

This year's OPEN MARKET party was hosted at the loft space of Highline Stages.

The style of this party certainly stands out from other tasting events and fundraisers in New York City.  The vibe was trendy and clubby as you would expect from any Meatpacking lounge.  The space was effortlessly cool, elegant, and refined.  DJs spun fun, enjoyable tunes while guests enjoyed hand crafted cocktails and fabulous food from restaurants of the Meatpacking District.

Participants in this year's event include Sweetgreen, Rag & Bone, Le Pain de Quotidien, Fig & Olive, Sugar Factory, Toro, Whitney Museum's Untitled, Scarpetta, Theory, Trina Turk, Joie, Helmut Lang, Morimoto NYC, Ample Hills Creamery, Jack's Stir Brew, Sherry B Dessert Studio, and more!

It's not everyday you get to enjoy the diverse tastes of this neighborhood all under one roof.  Just remember, you don't want to miss out on next year's OPEN MARKET party. #OPENMARKETNYC

Chef's Counter Club Opening - Soho, New York City

The "fine-fast" dining concept is quickly proliferating in the restaurant scene of New York City as the industry tries to find ways to build a sustainable business in an environment of rising storefront rents.  A number of well known fine dining restaurants of renowned chefs have closed in New York City in the past several years, notably the closing of Tom Colicchio's CraftBar restaurant in the Flatiron district.

One of our favorite casual fine dining restaurants in New York City is the newly opened Chef's Counter Club in Soho.  You can go and sample quick and affordable options for tasting popular dishes from some of the world's finest chefs.  The menu is curated by Didier Elena, a 20 year Alain Ducasse alumnus.

So what's unique about the Chef's Club Counter?  It's not your usual artisanal foodcourt where some dishes may be instagram popular but taste amateurish.

Eggslut : Originally a pop up food truck in Los Angeles, Eggslut has quickly gained a following for their original egg dishes that include the Fairfax, the Slut, and the Soho Salmon.  Most notable is the Slut, which is eggs poached in a glass jar with silk smooth potato puree, which reminds us of an amuse bouche dish you would get at a really fancy meal.

Jean-Georges Vongerichten : Here you can get a JG burger slider, any burger we've ever had at a Jean-George restaurant is a burger you wish you can have, well all the time!  The JG Burger has avocados, pepperjack cheese, and Russian dressing.

George Mendes's Aldea : Portugese Food - one of the finest heartiest cuisines in the world is generally not too easy to find even in New York City.  We can only wish we saw more casual yet delicious Portugese food in NYC but this is a good start indeed.

The best time to visit the Whitney Museum is during the summer, when you can explore amazing modern and avant-garde art and round off your day there with their amazing view of the Meatpacking District on their super spacious rooftop.

For fans of mobile sculptures, check out their current exhibit: Calder: Hypermobility, which focuses on the extraordinary breadth of movement and sound in the work of Alexander Calder.

Alexander Calder (1898 1976), The Arches, 1959. Painted steel, 106 × 107 1/2 × 87in. (269.2 × 273.1 × 221 cm)

This exhibition brings together a rich constellation of key sculptures for an opportunity to experience the works in motion. Regular activations of sculptures will occur in the galleries, revealing the creative kinetic nature of Calder’s work.

Alexander Calder (1898-1976), Untitled, 1942. Wood, wire, glass, and string, 52 3/4 × 26 × 12 in. (134 × 66 × 30 cm)

Calder’s sculptures are influenced in part by the artist’s fascination with choreography and performance; as reflected in their idiosyncratic motions and the perceptual responses they provoke.

The exhibition is organized by Jay Sanders, Engell Speyer Family Curator and Curator of Performance, with Greta Hartenstein, senior curatorial assistant, and Melinda Lang, curatorial assistant.

Sour Heart Book Launch : An Evening with Jenny Zhang and Lena Dunham - Housing Works, August 1, 2017

On August 1st, Lena Dunham introduced Jenny Zhang at Housing Works in New York City for a book talk about her latest work Sour Heart.

Unlike the Joy Luck Club and other well known asian american writers before Amy Tan that have published books now deemed 'classics' in your local public library, Sour Heartis a fresh new voice depicting the struggles of the modern immigrant experience in America. It's relatable in a way that Joy Luck Club isn't for young asian americans. The modern immigrant experience is about assimilation and originality so you won't see Jenny Zhang walking around in Amy Tan's contrived oriental look anytime soon.

Jenny's stories cut across an immigrant's orientation of space and time, moving from the Chinese immigrant enclaves of Flushing, Queens, to her cultural roots in Shanghai, China, and the the Cultural Revolution of the 1960s.

A daughter of Chinese immigrants herself, Jenny Zhang narrates stories of dumpster diving for food, scamming Atlantic City casino buses to make a buck, and other darkly humorous survival, coming of age, and assimilation tales.

Although we missed this excellent book talk you can catch a video clip here! Or get the book here.

The On Air Fest debuted at the Wythe Hotel in Williamsburg Brooklyn on March 1 - 4, 2018, bringing together innovative voices in podcasts and music. Themes in this year's event explored storytelling and creativity in sound.

Some of the lineup and presenters this year included DJ Stretch Armstrong, Musician Meshell Ndegeocello, director Brendan Baker of Wolverine, Jaime Morton (of My Dad Wrote a Porno), Surface Magazine designer Simonetta Nieto, podcaster Debbie Millman of Design Matters, and curator Matthew Yokobosky of the David Bowie exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. Miho Hatori, formerly of Cibbo Matto also performed prior to the opening day as well.

This event was an opportunity for podcasters, artists, designers, musicians, DJ, and others in the industry to get together and discuss their journeys, inspirations, and challenges of creating great work of impact on their audiences.

Lavish and unique parties are a part of New York City nightlife culture, and Halloween night is no exception.  With so many celebrities and cultural icons living in New York City, Halloween night is the time to see them all in some of the best costumes in town.  LVMH group's own tequila company Volcan De Mi Tierra hosted a party with New York's young urban tastemakers, and Heidi Klum had a Party City sponsored Halloween party at Levo with many recognizable attendees.  There really isn't any place in the world that can match the high energy ambitious social scene of New York City.

See You Soon Los Angeles

It's been a while since we've been to Los Angeles.

Ten years to be exact and we're going back for the Los Angeles Marathon.  #LAMARATHON

That's a lot of change for us to pack in and absorb when we get there soon.  Some of our favorite shops and restaurants may no longer be there but there will be exciting new ones to explore (at least we know we can still go to Mashti Malone for some creamy rosewater and orange blossom ice cream sigh!).

Other things like scenic spots of nature will still be there.  Scenic rock formations on Newport Beach. Mosquito free desert hikes.  We like to travel off the beaten path so we'll let you know what we find (and thank you to all our west coast friends for providing invaluable recommendations)!  And then you can contact us for the inside scoop and can't be missed spots of  sunny beautiful and gritty LA.
